A Word to EPUB converter turns a DOC, DOCX, ODT, RTF or TXT manuscript into an EPUB 3 ebook that reflows to fit phones, tablets and e-readers. The quick route, saving straight to EPUB from an office suite, often flattens the book. On our test document, LibreOffice's built-in EPUB export returned zero headings and zero lists from a file that had both. DocPivot builds the ebook package itself, so your headings, lists and tables survive, chapters split where you choose, and you set the title, author and cover before you download.
What DocPivot Word to EPUB Does
The tool converts a word-processing file into a valid EPUB 3 book with real chapters and a working table of contents. LibreOffice running on our server first converts your document to HTML, because its HTML writer keeps headings, lists and tables that its EPUB writer discards. Our own packager then cuts that HTML into chapters, rewrites each one as clean XHTML, pulls in the images with their alt text, and assembles the finished book.
Self-publishing authors, teachers, technical writers and small publishers use it most. A typical user has a finished manuscript in Microsoft Word or Google Docs and needs a file that Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books or Kindle will accept. If your manuscript only exists as a PDF, run it through PDF to Word first, fix the heading styles, and then convert it here.
The problem it solves is structural loss. A flattened EPUB shows every heading as a bold paragraph, so the reader's contents menu is empty and chapter navigation does not work. With DocPivot, a document with styled headings comes out as a book with chapters, a clickable contents list and a result card that confirms how many chapters were created.
Key Benefits of DocPivot Word to EPUB
- Structure that survives: Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles stay real headings, and bulleted lists, numbered lists and tables keep their markup instead of turning into styled paragraphs.
- Chapters you can navigate: The book is split into separate chapter files, so readers jump between chapters from the contents menu instead of scrolling one long page.
- Metadata stores need: You can edit the title and author before converting, and the tool warns you when either is missing, so a store does not reject the file days later.
- A cover you choose: The first image in your document becomes the cover only if you want it to, and that image stays in place inside the book.
- Correct language tagging: The document's language is read from the file and written into the package and every chapter, which helps stores categorize the book and screen readers pick the right voice.
- No account or software: Conversion runs online with no sign-up, no installation and no cost, on any device with a browser.
- Short data retention: Your manuscript and the finished EPUB are deleted from the server within 30 minutes of upload.
Core Features of DocPivot Word to EPUB
- Five input formats: Accepts DOC, DOCX, ODT, RTF and TXT, which covers Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, Google Docs downloads and most plain-text drafts.
- Chapter split control: Start a new chapter at every Heading 1, at every Heading 1 or Heading 2, or keep the whole document as a single chapter.
- Contents depth setting: Choose whether the table of contents lists one, two or three heading levels, with two as the default.
- Editable title and author: Type up to 200 characters for each field, or leave them blank to use the values stored in the document.
- Cover selection: Use the first image in the document as the cover, or produce the book with no cover at all.
- Front matter kept: Anything before the first heading, such as a title page or dedication, becomes an opening chapter unless it is empty.
- Two navigation files: Every book ships with the EPUB 3 navigation document and the older NCX file, because some reading systems and retailers still read the legacy format.
- Markup cleanup: Obsolete presentational tags that fail EPUBCheck are rewritten as CSS, and every contents link points to an anchor that exists.
- Image handling: Pictures are carried into the book with their alt text. If an illustration was shot on an iPhone, convert HEIC to JPG before inserting it into your document so every reader can display it.
- Result report: The result card shows the file name, file size and chapter count, plus warnings for a missing title or author.
How DocPivot Word to EPUB Works
- Upload your manuscript. Select a DOC, DOCX, ODT, RTF or TXT file. It joins the conversion queue on the server.
- Set the options. Confirm or edit the title and author, pick the chapter split point and contents depth, and decide on the cover.
- Convert to HTML. LibreOffice converts the document to HTML, keeping the headings, lists and tables that a direct EPUB export would drop.
- Split and package. The packager cuts the HTML into chapters, cleans the markup, adds both navigation files and builds the EPUB 3 container.
- Check the report and download. Review the chapter count and any warnings, then download the EPUB. Both files are deleted within 30 minutes.
Settings You Control in DocPivot Word to EPUB
Five settings shape the finished book, and each one has a default, so a well-styled document converts correctly without changing anything.
| Setting | Options | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Book title | Free text, up to 200 characters | Taken from the document |
| Author | Free text, up to 200 characters | Taken from the document |
| Start a new chapter at | Heading 1, Heading 2, or keep as one | Heading 1 |
| Contents depth | 1, 2 or 3 heading levels | 2 |
| Cover | First image in the document, or no cover | First image |
Pick Heading 2 as the split point when your Heading 1 marks parts of the book and Heading 2 marks the chapters inside them. Keep the document as one chapter for short pieces, such as a white paper or a single long essay.
When to Use DocPivot Word to EPUB
Use this converter when a document needs to be read on a screen of any size rather than printed. EPUB text reflows, so the reader can change the font size without zooming or scrolling sideways, which a fixed-layout PDF cannot do.
- Publishing a first ebook: Produce an EPUB to upload to Kobo Writing Life, Apple Books, Google Play Books or Kindle Direct Publishing.
- Sending advance reader copies: Give beta readers and reviewers a file they can open on their own devices.
- Reading your own draft: Load a manuscript onto an e-reader to proofread it away from the desk.
- Distributing course material: Turn lecture notes or a handbook into a book students read on phones.
- Packaging lead magnets: Offer a guide as an ebook alongside a PDF version, shrunk with Compress PDF so it downloads quickly.
- Archiving long documents: Keep reports and manuals in an open format that does not depend on one word processor.
Choose a PDF instead when exact page layout matters, such as a form, a print proof or a design portfolio. In that case Word to PDF keeps every page exactly as you designed it.
DocPivot Word to EPUB Use Cases
Self-Publishing a Novel
Context: An author has a 22-chapter novel in DOCX with each chapter title styled as Heading 1.
Process:
- Upload the DOCX and leave the split point at Heading 1.
- Type the pen name in the author field and confirm the title.
- Choose no cover, because the store takes the cover as a separate upload.
Result: The result card reports 22 chapters plus an opening chapter for the dedication, ready for KDP or Kobo.
Turning a Training Manual Into an Ebook
Context: An operations team has a 60-page manual with sections under Heading 1 and procedures under Heading 2.
Process:
- Split at Heading 1 so each section becomes a chapter.
- Set contents depth to 2 so every procedure appears in the menu.
- Check that numbered steps still appear as numbered lists.
Result: Staff open the manual on tablets and jump straight to the procedure they need.
Converting a Scanned Booklet
Context: A local history society has an out-of-print booklet that only exists as a scanned PDF.
Process:
- Run the scan through OCR PDF to make the text selectable.
- Export it to Word, then apply Heading 1 to each article title.
- Upload the cleaned DOCX and use the photo of the original cover.
Result: Members read a searchable ebook instead of a set of page images.
Sharing Course Notes With Students
Context: A lecturer writes weekly notes in Google Docs and wants one book for the semester.
Process:
- Download the notes from Google Docs as a DOCX file.
- Split at Heading 1, one chapter per week.
- Set the title to the course name and the lecturer as author.
Result: Students get one EPUB with a contents menu that lists every week of the course.
Preparing Your Document for DocPivot Word to EPUB
The quality of the ebook depends on how the document is styled, because chapters and the contents list come from heading styles. Text that only looks like a heading, typed in a larger bold font, is treated as an ordinary paragraph.
- Apply real heading styles: Use Heading 1 for chapter titles and Heading 2 for sections, from the Styles panel in Word or Google Docs.
- Use built-in list buttons: Lists typed with manual dashes or numbers stay as plain text.
- Prepare the cover image: Place the cover as the first image in the document. Use Crop Image to get a portrait shape, roughly 1.6 times taller than wide, which is the ratio Amazon recommends for ebook covers.
- Avoid vector covers: An SVG is never used as a cover, so convert SVG to PNG before you insert the cover art.
- Keep images light: Large photos inflate the file size, and some stores charge delivery fees based on size. Run pictures through the Image Compressor before placing them in the document, and switch a heavy screenshot from PNG to JPG when transparency is not needed.
- Remove page furniture: Headers, footers, page numbers and manual page breaks mean nothing in a reflowable ebook.
- Add alt text: Describe each image in Word, because the alt text is carried into the EPUB for screen reader users.
DocPivot Word to EPUB Compared With Other Free Converters
The main difference is chapter and contents control inside a browser tool. The free online converters we checked, FreeConvert and Online-Convert, let you change the title and author, but neither shows a setting for the chapter split point, contents depth or cover choice. Free desktop programs such as Calibre and the DAISY Consortium's WordToEPUB add-in do offer cover, metadata and contents options, but they must be installed, and WordToEPUB runs only on Windows.
| Feature | Direct office suite EPUB export | DocPivot Word to EPUB |
|---|---|---|
| Headings and lists | Flattened to styled paragraphs on our LibreOffice test | Kept as real headings and lists |
| Chapter control | None | Split at Heading 1, Heading 2, or keep as one |
| Contents list | Whatever the exporter produces | EPUB 3 and NCX navigation, depth 1 to 3 |
| Title and author | Taken from file properties | Editable, with the document as fallback |
| Cover | No choice offered | First image or no cover, and the image stays in the book |
| Feedback | None | Chapter count plus missing title or author warnings |
Calibre handles covers differently. By default it treats a large image near the start of a DOCX as the cover and extracts it from the body of the book, although a DOCX input option turns that off. DocPivot leaves the image where the author placed it.
Limitations of DocPivot Word to EPUB
Knowing the limits helps you decide whether this tool or a desktop program fits your project.
- One file at a time: Each conversion handles a single document, so batch jobs need repeated uploads.
- No separate cover upload: The cover must be the first image in the document, or the book has no cover.
- Flat contents list: The table of contents shows up to three levels but does not nest them, while Calibre can produce a nested contents tree.
- Server processing: Files are uploaded for conversion rather than handled inside your browser, although they are deleted within 30 minutes and never sent to a third party.
- Reflowable only: Picture books and comics that need fixed page layouts are better kept as PDF.
