Auto orientation is the setting worth understanding. It lets each page follow its own image, so a batch mixing portrait phone shots with landscape scans comes out correct throughout instead of correct for half the file. Forcing Portrait or Landscape stays available when a recipient has specified a format.

Fit gives the page the proportions of the picture, capped at the long edge of A4 so the document stays printable. A4 and US Letter are the safer choice for anything that will be physically printed or filed.

How DocPivot JPG to PDF Handles Phone Photo Rotation

Sideways photos are the most common complaint about image to PDF conversion, and the cause is a mismatch between how a phone stores a picture and how a PDF displays it. Hold a phone upright and the sensor still records landscape pixels, with an orientation tag added telling software to rotate the result. Photo apps read that tag, so the picture looks correct everywhere you normally view it.

PDF embedding is where the tag gets lost. Copying JPEG data straight into a document carries the pixels but not the instruction attached to them, which is why converters built this way output portrait photos on their side. It is a documented failure in the underlying libraries, and the usual advice given to users is to rotate every affected page by hand.

DocPivot reads the orientation tag from the JPEG before embedding and converts it into a page rotation, so untouched image data does not cost you upright pages. Values 3, 6 and 8 are applied automatically. The four mirrored values are left alone, because a flip cannot be expressed as a rotation and guessing would swap one wrong result for another.

File Formats the JPG to PDF Converter Accepts

DocPivot accepts six input formats, in two groups that behave differently inside the document.

  • Embedded without re-encoding: JPG and JPEG, PNG.
  • Re-encoded before embedding: WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF.

The first group keeps its original data, so quality matches the source and the PDF stays roughly the combined weight of the files you added. The second group cannot be carried natively by the PDF format, so those images are converted first, with photographs routed to JPEG and graphics or anything holding transparency routed to PNG.

Output is a standard PDF that opens in any reader, browser or print workflow. If the file needs to travel by email, images can be reduced beforehand in Image Compressor or resized in Image Resizer, which usually looks better than compressing the finished document.

Honest Limitations of DocPivot JPG to PDF

Several constraints are worth knowing before you start, and some of them are genuine disadvantages against server based converters.

  • HEIC is not supported and cannot be. iPhones shoot HEIC by default and no browser can decode it without a server, so those files are refused with a pointer to HEIC to JPG rather than a misleading error. Several upload based competitors do accept HEIC directly, and for an iPhone user that is a real extra step here.
  • Mirrored EXIF orientations are ignored. The four flipped values cannot be represented as a rotation, so those rare files are embedded as stored.
  • Animated GIFs become a single frame. Only the first frame is converted, since a static page cannot hold an animation.
  • Large batches depend on your hardware. No server does the work, so a low memory phone will struggle with a batch a laptop handles comfortably.
  • The text in your images stays an image. Conversion does not make photographed words searchable or selectable.
  • Fit is capped at the A4 long edge. Pages take the shape of the picture but not its pixel count, because a 4624 by 3468 photo treated as page units produces a sheet 64 by 48 inches that no printer accepts.
